A Tribute to Harold Tobias
The news was broken by Cynthia that, sadly, Harold passed away on 1st April 2012.
Harold Tobias was a great man who cared greatly for the children of Swellendam. Along with his wife Cynthia, they founded The Cooper Street Project and Bill and I are greatly honoured to have met this wonderful couple.
When the children from the local shanty town had nowhere to go, Harold built a Wendy House in their garden and they invited the children into their home for food as well as giving them somewhere to do their homework. Harold was truly an inspiration to all of us, not just for his many accomplishments, but because of who he was - a friend with a wonderful sense of humour.
His very sad death has sent ripples of sadness throughout Swellendam and also throughout his friends overseas and our hearts now go out to Cynthia and the children. The children of Swellendam now have a huge responsibility in looking after Cynthia.
Harold will be sadly missed by all of us.
